Wrinkle treatment with hyaluronic acid (filler)

Non-invasive treatment - Prof. Dr Charlotte Holm Mühlbauer is a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery

Hyaluronic acid is regarded as a miracle weapon in anti-ageing therapy. Not without reason: hyaluronic acid is a legendary active ingredient with a wide range of applications on the body. Chemically speaking, hyaluronic acid is a chain of sugar molecules. It is precisely this fact that makes hyaluronic acid interesting: both for medicine and for cosmetics. This is because sugar has the ability to bind water. Hyaluronic acid can bind around 6000 times its own weight in water - ideal for use against wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid - miracle weapon in anti-ageing therapy

Thanks to its moisturising and binding properties, hyaluronic acid makes the skin appear clear, plump and radiant. The effect is immediately visible and the possible side effects are minimal. Hyaluronic acid smoothes wrinkles, beautifies facial contours, makes lips fuller and has a positive effect on your radiance.

Treatment with hyaluronic acid is carried out in our practice at the private ATOS Clinic in Munich.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is an important and natural component of connective tissue and forms the so-called extracellular matrix outside the skin cells. One of its biological functions is its ability to bind water in the skin: the skin swells and appears firm and wrinkle-free. Hyaluronic acid also inhibits inflammation, serves as a lubricant in joints, influences the permeability of cells and promotes wound healing. The concentration of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases significantly with increasing age. As a result, the connective tissue in the skin stores less water - the skin appears less elastic and tends to wrinkle.

Hyaluronic acid for wrinkle injections used to be extracted from the red combs of roosters. Modern hyaluronic acid products are produced using genetic engineering and are largely identical to human hyaluronic acid. Genetically engineered hyaluronic acid is usually prepared in such a way that it is not immediately washed out again, but is only slowly broken down by the skin. This is known as cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid products have a short-term water binding capacity and are used for hydration therapy and skin regeneration. The density of the hyaluronic acid also plays an important role. The fine lines around the lips and eyes (crow's feet) can be filled with rather thin substances. More viscous structures, on the other hand, are suitable for lifting drooping corners of the mouth, plumping up deep nasolabial folds and for plumping up the lips. To build up volume on the cheeks and chin, the structure of the preparation must be particularly dense. These viscous preparations have a very long shelf life and are injected deep into the bone. Overall, hyaluronic acid molecules have the advantage of being particularly well tolerated.
